A road crash in Adanwomaso in the Kwabre East Municipality of the Ashanti Region has claimed three lives, including two police officers.

The July 9 road crash also left two people in a critical condition.

Adom News reported that the crash involved a bullion van and a truck carrying bags of cement. Four of the victims, including two police officers, were onboard the bullion van in which only the driver survived.

An eyewitness stated that the bullion van veered into the lane of the oncoming Kia truck, resulting in the crash.

Past road crashes involving police

Some police officers at the Nsawam Police District were involved in a road crash on the Adeiso-Nsawam road in March.

The incident involved a Toyota pickup that experienced a mechanical fault at Uptown on the Adeiso-Nsawam road in the Eastern Region.

The victims of the crash were sent to the Nsawam Government Hospital for treatment, and police impounded the accident vehicles.

This crash came after three police officers died in a road crash at Kyekyewere along the Accra-Kumasi Highway. The police were on operational duties at the time of the road crash on March 27, 2024.

The Ghana Police Service disclosed their identities as Chief Inspector Michael Adzaho, PW Inspector Theresa Zampiah and General Corporal Emmanuel Asamoah.

In April 2024, a police officer died in an accident while chasing a suspect at Kentinkrono in the Ashanti Region. He collided with a stationary truck during his pursuit, dying on the spot.

Concerns for road safety in Ghana

Between January and September 2024, 1,817 lives were lost through road crashes, which was an 8.35% increase on the 1,677 lives lost during the same period in 2023.

The National Road Safety Authority also noted that the total number of road crashes decreased, with 9,820 incidents, representing a 7.48% drop from 10,614 in 2023.

From January to September 2024, 11,408 individuals sustained injuries in road crashes, down from 11,694 in the same timeframe in 2023.

Additionally, 1,750 pedestrians were struck in 2024, compared to 1,847 in 2023. GBC News reported on this data in December 2024.
