Fire Guts Accra Tourist Info Centre and Rockstones Office: “Oh No”

A fire has gutted the Accra Tourist Information Centre and Rockstones Office, leading to a prompt response from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).

The exact time the fire started is yet to be confirmed, but the Director of Diaspora Affairs at the Office of the President, Kofi Okyere-Darko (KOD), shared the news on his Facebook page around 2 am on Monday, August 4, 2025.

In the Facebook post, Kofi Okyere-Darko (KOD) said:

“What a shame! Fire outbreak reported at the Accra Tourist Centre and Rockstone’s.”

A video that accompanied the post showed thick smoke rising from the Accra Tourist Information Centre and Rockstones Office.

In a Facebook post, the GNFS indicated that the fire was reported at exactly 01:02 am, and the first fire engine arrived there at 01:04 am

"A fire outbreak was reported at the Accra Tourist Information Centre located at Cantonments at exactly 0102 hours. The first fire engine from the GNFS National Headquarters arrived on scene at 0104 hours to a fully developed stage fire which was spreading rapidly in all directions, aided by strong winds."
"Five (5) additional fire appliances from the Flagstaff House, Circle, Accra City, Ministries Fire Stations, and the Rapid Intervention Vehicle (RIV) from Headquarters were swiftly mobilised to support firefighting operations," it added.

The GNFS added that they brought the blaze under control at 03:32 am, but only ended the firefighting at 06:35 am.

The GNFS shared a preliminary report on the fire, indicating which places had been burned.

"The entire first floor and its contents were completely consumed by the fire. However, the ground floor and about 8 offices, including the East Wing section of the ground floor, were successfully salvaged from the fire’s ruins."
"Thankfully, no injuries were recorded. The Service has launched an investigation into the cause of the fire," it added.

“Our laws are just sleeping. Where I live now is mandatory for every apartment or company to have a fire hydrant and also a fire extinguisher. If it is an apartment, at least two people in that apartment will be trained how to handle fire when it occurs before the fire service arrives.”

Minister proposes new tax to support Fire Service

YEN.com.gh reported that the Interior Minister, Muntaka Mubarak, proposed a new tax on fuel to financially support the works of the GNFS.

Mubarak suggested that the tax on fuel could be up to 10 pesewas per litre of fuel bought

The minister was speaking during a visit to the scene of the fire in Adum in Kumasi, Ashanti Region
