The tragic helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight people, including two prominent ministers, has triggered emotional reactions from Nigerians.

While Ghanaians mourned the heartbreaking loss, Nigerians took to social media to express outrage and disillusionment with their government.

Many Nigerians turned the tragedy into an outlet for political frustration.

It was reported that the Z9 helicopter, with three crew and five passengers, took off from the capital, Accra, at 09:12 am (GMT) and was heading to the town of Obuasi for an event to tackle illegal mining.

Sadly, the Defence Minister, Edward Omane Boamah, and the Environment Minister, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, were killed in the crash.

Nigerians react to tragic helicopter crash

At the time of filing this report, the authorities have yet to confirm the cause of the crash. The Ghanaian military said investigations had been launched.

Ghana's Deputy National Security Coordinator and former Agriculture Minister, Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, was also among the dead, along with Samuel Sarpong, Vice-Chairman of the governing National Democratic Congress party.

The crew members were named as Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

YEN.com.gh observed that a post shared by Nigerian media outlet Legit.ng sparked hundreds of comments, many of which triggered readers.

Rather than offering condolences, several Nigerians wished a similar tragedy would occur in their own country.

Many criticised some political leaders perceived as corrupt or unaccountable.

Amid the political outrage, others also took time to sympathise with Ghana and send words of comfort. Some expressed grief over the tragic loss of lives.

President Mahama mourns helicopter crash victims

YEN.com.gh had earlier reported that two ministers and three military personnel were victims of the crash. The Z-9 helicopter was en route to Obuasi when it went down, prompting an investigation into the cause of the crash.

In response, President John Mahama declared three days of national mourning beginning Thursday, August 7, 2025, and suspended all official engagements for the week. The Chief of Staff also ordered all national flags to be flown at half-mast until further notice.
