Celebrations are in high gear at the University of Ghana (UG) following the runoff elections that concluded on Thursday, August 21, 2025.

The 2025 University of Ghana Students' Representative Council (UGSRC) runoff elections concluded with a surprising victory for the UJAMAAAA ticket.

The victory was led by Richmond Ofori Larbi as President and Gyampo Ayeh Ebenezer Derrick as Vice President.

The outstanding election result, announced on Thursday, saw over 16,000 students unite to make history on the campus grounds.

The winning duo secured 16,074 votes, representing 63.2 percent of the total 25,429 votes cast.

A post shared by Voice of Legon on X showed the significant voter turnout of 59,460 eligible students, with the UJAMAAAA ticket topping their opponents, Evander Kofi Akrassi and Michael Fareed Yeng Anwar. This duo gathered 9,355 (36.8 percent) votes.

This victory was a significant shift in student governance at one of Ghana's most prestigious institutions, with the newly elected leaders pledging to deliver the right change.

In a celebratory post on X, Richmond Ofori Larbi expressed gratitude to the student body.

His statement read:

"Over 16,000 students made this history together. The University of Ghana decided to go with UJAMAAAA. We shall get the job done with God on our side."

As the academic year progresses, all eyes will be on the UJAMAAAA leadership to deliver on their vision, with many hoping this election marks the beginning of a new era of student governance at UG.

UG debunks Malik Basintale’s degree claim

In a similar report, YEN.com.gh had earlier reported that the University of Ghana denied reports suggesting that Malik Basintale, CEO of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), did not graduate.

In a statement issued on June 2, 2025, the university called claims that Basintale did not fulfil graduation requirements or receive an official certificate "false."

The university also clarified that a circulating letter allegedly signed by the Registrar was a forgery.

John Dumelo donates rice to UG students

YEN.com.gh had earlier reported that the Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture, John Dumelo, donated 500 bags of rice to support University of Ghana students.

The Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon presented the items to the Dean of Students, who was given the responsibility of distributing them.

Some social media users commended the politician and actor for his generosity on Facebook.
