The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, broke down in tears at the wreath-laying ceremony for eight Ghanaians killed in a helicopter crash.

Two cabinet ministers, Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, the Minister for Defence of Ghana, and Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, the Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, were reported dead after a helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.

The two were part of a five-member government delegation headed to Obuasi to attend an anti-illegal mining event.

Other members of the delegation included the Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, Muniru Mohammed, former NDC Obuasi East parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye, and the Vice Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Sarpong.

All five were confirmed dead in the crash by the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, in a press conference held at the Jubilee House.

Three other members of the Ghana Air Force, who were operating the military helicopter, died in the crash.

Okudzeto Ablakwa weeps at wreath-laying event

Following the tragedy, the government of Ghana declared three days of national mourning, beginning on Thursday, August 7.

A wreath-laying event was also organised at the seat of government, the Jubilee House, where prominent Ghanaians could appear to leave wreaths at a memorial erected for the crash victims.

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa appeared at the memorial on Friday, August 8, to lay a wreath.

Speaking to the media, he described the loss as a heart-wrenching one.

Wiping away tears, the Minister said none of the individuals on the flight deserved to lose their lives in such a manner.

Muntaka Mubarak weeps after helicopter crash

Previously, YEN.com.gh reported that Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak broke down in tears following the death of Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah in a helicopter crash.

Muntaka wept at the Jubilee House after the deaths of eight people in the crash were confirmed.

According to reports, the Asawase MP was scheduled to be on the flight but failed to return to Ghana on time after a recent trip abroad.
