Ghana’s Mohammed Kudus endured a night of crushing disappointment as Tottenham Hotspur let a two-goal lead slip in the UEFA Super Cup, eventually losing to Paris Saint-Germain on penalties.

Spurs looked set to lift the trophy with a comfortable 2-0 advantage after 84 minutes. The job seemed done. But football has a way of twisting the plot in its dying moments, and PSG delivered a late sting.

Heartbreak for Kudus as PSG clinch UEFA Super Cup

Six minutes after Kudus was substituted, Lee Kang-In pulled one back for the French champions. The atmosphere shifted instantly, and Tottenham’s grip on the match began to loosen.

Deep into stoppage time, Goncalo Ramos rose highest to head home a dramatic equaliser in the 94th minute, silencing the Spurs bench and sending the contest straight into a penalty shootout.

According to the BBC, PSG blinked first when Vitinha dragged his opening kick wide. It was Tottenham’s moment to capitalise, but Micky van de Ven, scorer of Spurs’ first goal, saw his effort saved by Lucas Chevalier.

Substitute Mathys Tel, then compounded the damage, firing off target. That miss gave PSG the advantage, and Nuno Mendes made no mistake, burying the winning penalty to crown the French side champions.

For Kudus, the loss carried extra weight. This was his chance to become only the second Ghanaian to win the UEFA Super Cup, following Thomas Partey’s triumph with Atletico Madrid in 2018.

Instead, the 25-year-old had to watch from the sidelines as the dream slipped away.

After the final whistle, an image of him sitting alone on the pitch went viral, head lowered, shoulders dropped, eyes fixed on the grass, capturing the pain of the moment.

Until his substitution, Kudus had been a constant menace to the PSG defence. His strength, quick feet, and relentless dribbling repeatedly exposed Nuno Mendes, forcing the full-back into desperate tackles.

He also worked tirelessly without the ball, tracking back, closing spaces, and pressing high to keep Spurs in control. But once he left the pitch, PSG’s comeback gathered pace.

The defeat means Thomas Partey still holds the distinction of being Ghana’s only UEFA Super Cup winner.

It also extended an ongoing trend: Champions League winners have now claimed the trophy for seven consecutive years, a run that began immediately after Partey’s win in 2018, according to IFFHS.

There is little time for Spurs to dwell on the heartbreak. The 2025/26 Premier League season is about to kick off, and they will need to regroup quickly.
