The Tamale South MP, who doubles as Minister for Education, is a long-time supporter of Liverpool and a devoted football lover, making the stopover feel natural rather than ceremonial.

Karela’s players were left delighted as their owner joined them on the pitch, spending time to fraternise before delivering words of encouragement ahead of the new campaign.

His appearance added a lift to the team’s preparations for the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season, which kicks off on September 12, per Ghanafa.org.

For Haruna Iddrisu, football is not merely a business. Away from parliament and cabinet duties, he often plays the game himself on weekends and holidays in his hometown of Tamale.

His involvement in the sport goes beyond the touchline, showing a deep connection to the game and its people.

Aside from owning Karela, he also controls Division One side Steadfast FC, the club that groomed Leicester City winger Abdul Fatawu Issahaku.

The youngster’s transfer from Sporting CP to the English Premier League reportedly cost 17 million euros, with Steadfast and the legislator pocketing 7.9 million euros from the deal, according to Flashscore.

It was a testament to his ability to spot and nurture talent that can rise to the global stage.

Last season, Karela finished 14th, surviving relegation by just six points.

Now, with the backing of their ambitious owner, the Pride and Passion Lads aim to improve their standing and restore belief among their fans.

History of Karela United

The club’s story stretches back to its days as Metro Stars, when they fought their way through the Division One League to earn promotion in 2017.

Tragedy struck in 2018 after the passing of their first owner, Senator David Brigidi, which plunged the side into financial distress.

The turning point came in 2022 when Hon. Iddrisu stepped in, acquiring the team and relocating it from Aiyinase to Tamale.

Since then, he has bankrolled operations, ensuring stability and offering players the support they need to compete at the top level.

With a new season approaching, his presence in Sunyani served as a reminder that the man steering Karela’s future is as invested emotionally as he is financially.
